Forecasting the Future of Work

At school, we still memorise grammar rules, the formula for kinetic energy and the dates of historic battles. And a good degree has long been treated as a near guarantee of a place in the job market.

That world is changing. AI tools that anyone can use today write entire texts, win gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad and solve open problems that have puzzled humanity for the past 80 years. AI is only beginning to replace translators, programmers and illustrators – and over time it will reach other knowledge professions too.

In this talk, we look at what forecasters and research expect for the coming years: which jobs and skills are likely to change first, and how to plan a career when the future is uncertain.

Forecasting Global Events

When will the war in Ukraine end? Will China attack Taiwan? Will rapid advances in AI leave a large part of the population unable to use banking services?

In this talk, you will not only hear what forecasters expect on questions like these – you will also learn how to use forecasting platforms, which share data about the future in the language of probability. We will show how the accuracy of predictions is measured, explain who superforecasters are, and recommend sources of information worth following in turbulent times.

A forest path that splits into two

Forecasting Your Life

Predicting the future is neither charlatanry nor a rare superpower. It is something our brains do naturally, almost all the time:

Can I trust this person? Will I like this food? Will I be too warm in this T-shirt? Will the renovation stay on schedule and on budget? How will I feel when I step onto the stage?

So the question is not whether we can predict our own future, but how to get better at it – so that our expectations match more closely what actually happens in our lives, around us and within ourselves.

There is a group of people whose forecasts prove accurate again and again. Can these superforecasters inspire us to do better? Together we will look at the ways of thinking, approaches and methods behind their success – and at the practical tips we can take from them to sharpen our own judgement and decision-making.
